Wolf Tooth Delivers More Chainring Options for 12-Speed Shimano GRX

The new Shimano GRX gravel group is great, but the official 1x chainring options are limited. Shimano offers only 40- and 42-tooth rings. Wolf Tooth Component’s Drop Stop ST chainrings increase that substantially, with both round and oval options.

WTC’s options range from 36- to 46-tooth, and weights range from 65.5g up to 102g. They use same 110BCD asymmetric 4-bolt mounting pattern and 50mm chainline to match GRX’s specs. Larger 48, 50, and 52 tooth counts are in the works for later this year.

The “ST” versions are designed for Shimano’s 12-speed Hyperglide chains, which is what the new 12-speed GRX groups use. The same chainrings are also available in their “Drop Stop B” tooth profile, which is for SRAM FlatTop and Eagle 12-speed chains as well as 9/10/11/12-speed chains from KMC, Connex, Wipperman, and Campagnolo.

The new GRX group allows you to swap cassettes and derailleur cages, but these make it easier to change the gear ratios depending on the severity of the gravel you’re riding, without affecting the total gear range.

but I thought, and this has been widely reported, that the chainline for a 1-speed grx is 47mm!??
What is now valid and correct?

50mm, or more specifically 49.7mm is correct for Shimano 1×12 chainline.

47mm for GRX 2x. GRX 1x uses the same crank, putting the 1x chainline way out at 49.7mm. I’m seeing that land on the 4th smallest cog.

Wolf Tooth makes awesome stuff. I wish they made a 144 BCD chainring for my wearing out Omnium.

“these make it easier to change the gear ratios depending on the severity of the gravel you’re riding” I find it a lot simpler to just use a front derailleur; I can switch from a 30 to a 46 tooth chainring whenever I want! The 2×11 GRX Di2 rear derailleur easily handles an 11-40 cassette, giving me a 567% range with moderate steps between all of the gears – better than any 1x setup. I can’t see any advantage of leaving 1 chainring at home or switching it out depending on what kind of ride I have planned.

100%. Would love to see some other 2x chainring options for GRX that don’t have such a big tooth count difference. Not holding my breath, though.
